2007-08 Religious Education Program

The theme for this year's program is Life Issues. In previous years we have focused on Unitarian Universalism (06 - 07 and 03 - 04), World Religions (05 - 06), Life Issues (04 - 05), and Multiculturism (02 - 03).

Three and Four Year Olds will be using Celebrating Me and My World. This is a wonderful curriculum that provides experiences and opportunities for children to develop self-identity as well as a sense of connection with all life. Children grow in trust and caring as they explore the wondrous qualities they have, as well as the qualities of animals, objects and people.

Kindergarten through 5th Graders will begin with Five Sundays of Unitarian Universalism Lessons and then will spend the rest of the year studying Life Issues, which includes:

Lessons of Loss (Octoboer to November)

Each class will use age-appropriate curricula that will provide opportunities for them to:

  • Recognize that change and loss are a part of life
  • Voice fears and questions about loss in a safe environment
  • Recognize that everyone deals with the wide range of feelings associated with loss in a different way
  • Identify UU and other religious/cultural traditions concerning death and dying
  • Understand how our Seven Principles offer guidance in understanding loss and the grieving process
  • Develop a personal theology regarding loss, death, dying, and respectfully remember loved ones who have died.

In Our Hands (January to May)

Each class will use age-appropriate curricula that will provide opportunities for them to:

  • Explore their knowledge and feelings about peace and fairness
  • Learn about conflict and unfairness and explore ways of resolving conflict and promoting peace and fairness in their relationships
  • Learn what it means to treat the Earth peacefully and fairly
  • Identify Unitarian Universalists who have contributed to peace and fairness in the world

Middle School (6th - 8th) Group

Middle Schoolers will be participating in a "Small Group Experience" this year. They will be following the "Neighboring Faiths" curriculum. The exact schedule may vary slightly. In general, the first Sunday will be a lesson introducing them to a religion or group of similar religions, the second Sunday will be a visit to a church of that type in Colorado Springs. The third Sunday will be a lesson during which they discuss their experience. The fourth Sunday will be free so they can attend a Worship Service at All Souls. The youth, parents and advisors will decide where to meet.

YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists)

Youth in grades 9 - 12 are encouraged to attend the service of worship each Sunday. High school juniors and seniors may sign up to assist with the RE Program for children, if desired. Please see Stephanie Sharp or Allison Tyler for further information on this great opportunity.

This year's YRUU program will depend highly on the number of registered high schoolers. Please check back with Stephanie or Allison for more details.

There are also opportunities for our youth to join the larger Unitarian Universalist community and form lasting friendships with like-minded youth by participating in district conferences and events. You can find out more by going to
